Tatsuya Nakatani/KBD @ the Robinwood
Last night we went to Gabe’s place in the Old West End of Toledo to see avant drummer Tatsuya Nakatani. Some of the best experimental drumming I’ve ever seen, hands down. I’ve seen a lot of drummers mess around with stuff on top of their drumset, but none of them had their shit together like this. Working mostly with bowed gongs and metal bowls, Nakatani created a huge range of incredible tones that was constantly changing and building up to some incredible climaxes. A really phenomenal set of mind and body-altering music. KBD played a great set as a prepared slide guitar & drums duo and Construction Telescope did some avant sax noodling to start everything else. It was my first time in the Robinwood Concert House, but hopefully I’ll get to see a lot more shows there, it’s a great intimate venue for experimental music.
